A major oyster farming site

For a very long time Fouras-les-Bains has been linked with oyster and mussel growing. It is the first national centre for capturing oyster larvae or spat. In July and August on the “Pointe de la Fumée” you can see without  these lines of “collectors” that are placed to collect the precious "spat" of oysters.

In La Fumée, you enter the oyster farming quarters : “cabanes”, piles of collectors where baby oysters stick, sun burnt farmers of the sea with their thigh pants driving their tractors towing the barges – flat bottom boats – to the shore.

From La Fumée, you can also take the ferry to Aix Island or go on a cruise around the Fort Boyard.
