A fortified village

Aix Island hides natural and surprising treasures: forest, vineyards, sandy beaches and coves.

You will find, small houses with rows of hollyhocks surrounded by imposing fortifications that have rested been there since the island played a defensive role of the estuary at the end of the 17th century.

The small island, only 3 kilometers long and 600 meters large, was also the last refuge of Napoleon 1st before he left to go into exile at Saint Helena : the governor’s house where he resided holds today the National Museum dedicated to the Emperor.

Aix island hides other curiosities: Batterie de Jamblet recently converted into a museography, Musée de la Nacre (Mother-of -Pearl house), Fort Liedot with guided visits during the summer ….

Turn your head and you might see the red and white lighthouse that overlooks the island:an emblematical view of Aix.

A wild preserved land

To get out of the village, take the church gateway path,on foot on a bicycle or in a horsedrawn carriage, the island tour is seven kilometres long by way of the « sentier des douaniers »(custom officer's path). We cross the hamlet of the Bois Joly with its small houses and we arrive at the point of Coudepont.

Here the climate is exceptionally mild and exotic plants thrive.

On this small island you will find all varieties of coastline that exist in the Charente-Maritime.

If you arrive early in the morning and leave late in the evening you will have the opportunity to observe the remarkable luminosity of Aix island : different colours on the ocean side and yet again different on the continent side, and also peaceful silence and refreshing invigorating air. It is a marvellous island..

On the side of the island…

On the other side of the island you will come across the imposing Fort Liedot, this giant stone building had many uses ; military camp, prison, and holiday camp.

Today there are only guided visits proposed by the Tourist Office .

Leaving the fort behind you take the Ocean path and stop off at the "Batterie Jamblet" to see the new museography exhibition which is free.

On the other side of the street the cemetery is hidden behind a small wall. What a surprise ; we can see a minature replica of Napoleon's tomb !
